Introduction to Medieval Armenian Culture: A Visit to the Matenadaran

Ninth-grade students from the Gazprom Armenia CJSC Educational and Sports Complex visited the Matenadaran’s “Skills, Crafts, and Arts of Medieval Armenia” laboratory-exhibition hall.

With the guidance of subject teacher Lilit Grigoryan in the innovative laboratory, the students explored medieval Armenian culture through a hands-on, experiential format.

During the visit, they studied the entire process of creating manuscripts, from the selection of materials to the unique aspects of writing, design, and coloring, revealing the knowledge that the Armenian people accumulated and transmitted during the Middle Ages.

The visit integrated the subjects of Armenian Language, Literature, History, and Fine Arts, creating a dynamic learning environment. The students had the opportunity to gain insight into the life, professions, and methods of knowledge transmission in medieval Armenia, appreciating the importance of the manuscript as the primary source of information during that period.

The visit also contributed to the development of critical thinking: the students discussed how historical sources are created, what our knowledge of the Middle Ages is based on, and the role manuscripts play as sources.

Such educational visits offer an opportunity to connect the school curriculum with a real cultural environment, making learning more comprehensible, engaging, and memorable.
